What to do if you have a smashed car window

If your car has been broken into you will need to call the police to report the incident, along with your insurance company who will require an incident number in order to process any claim you may need to make.

Document the scene by taking photos, making sure you capture all angles of both interior and exterior damage. Remember not to touch anything if you can.

Make a list of any missing property that you had in the car along with any missing car components. If you have had any personal information stolen, for instance a credit card, contact the relevant companies so they are put on fraud alert and immediately cancelled.

Gather together your insurance details, driving licence and logbook so you have all your information to hand. File a report with the police and then call your insurance company if you feel the case warrants a claim.

Once the police have agreed that the crime scene can be released, you can make preparations to temporarily fix the car window to keep the vehicle safe and protected from the elements. If you are unable to get the window fixed same day, make sure the vehicle is left in a secure place until you can get it fixed.

Cleaning up a smashed car window

• Vacuum up as much of the glass pieces that you can
• If you need to remove glass from the door, do so carefully whilst wearing protective gloves
• Clean the frame of any dirt
• Create a temporary waterproof cover with masking tape and bin bags, this is only a temporary measure!
• Ensure you tape from the inside, to prevent any sort of damage to the paint
